Enzian Expansion! (Practice story, DO NOT USE FOR PUBLICATION!!!)

West Campus – A new vision and possible growth in business was discussed regarding the Enzian theater expansion.

Henry Maldonado who is the current president of the Enzian board.  had dropped by Valencia College on Dec.3 and shared inside stories about the project and its costs.

“The Enzian will be building two additional theaters and both of the theaters will have full size screens.” said Henry. Enzian at this point makes it’s revenue solely through the food stand and the bar. Without the bar and kitchen, Henry said “ The theater would close.”

The construction may face some problem Henry said due to “uneven dirt slopes,” but the everything should be resolved once the company begins the construction because the theaters are scheduled to open before the Florida Film Festival.

Orlando Sentinel says and quotes Mr. Maldonado “ an expansion will let the theater provide more diverse offerings.

“The original theater itself will have a new entrance and the seating for the two additional theaters will be small compared to the original theater.” Maldonado says that since the large theater is sometimes sold out, there is no coordination for corporate events. So the new theaters will resolve the problem by having less seatings but more screening can be done at a time.

The new theaters are expected to have a total of 140 seats. 60 seats in the first theater and 80 seats in the second theater.

This project however cannot begin at the moment because the board has not yet submitted the paperwork to the City Council as of yet. Maldonado did mention that they are working on it.

If the paperwork is finished on time and the board gets a thumbs up from the City Council of Orlando, than this is going to be one of the biggest projects for the Enzian. Despite the budget being about 6 million dollars, there can be more people on the premises. Enzian can only have about 210 people but with the additional theater, it can hold about 360 people says Maldonado. More people more money.

Assistant manager Carl Turner of the Cobb Web Plaza Theater said “ If Enzian gets the okay for the project, this will drastically affect our business greatly. We will lose customers because our prices are expensive. Carl further denotes “ Since the theater will most likely have the same prices, than we have a stiff competition.”

West Campus – “In the year of 2000 I went to Germany a man asked me what kind of Cuban are you? A Fidel Cuban or a Miami Cuban?” said Yoani Sanchez.

Yoani Sanchez is on a mission to break the stereotypic barrier that has been going on for many years on how people look at Cuba since the Fidel Castro regime started and after it was over.

She came to Valencia College on Oct 31 to have a “Conversation” with the faculty and staff members, as well as students, to talk about Cuba, how it was before and how it is now.

“I want young generations to understand Cuba better”, said Sanchez. She has been doing this through her blogs and twitter by educating people about Cuba. She receives on average 15 million views per day. This is more followers than Fidel Castro.

She had begun blogging in 1994 after receiving her first laptop that she called a “monster.” She knew that with this kind of technology she could do something about Castro’s regime.

Many people living in Cuba in 1994 were trying to survive food crisis as well as economic crisis. The others were making rafts with items such as dining room tables and trying to escape the Castro Regime by going to Florida.

She wrote her first blog with her “little monster” about a story called “Letter by Letter”. The reason why it was called “Letter by Letter”, she mentioned, was because it was written letter by letter because she did not know how to type.

At her Q&A session she brought up some interesting points that most people would not know. She said 11 million people access approximately 118 sites per day because some are blocked. “The internet makes $5 an hour”, said Sanchez. “An average monthly salary is not even $20 per hour.”

“150 people have access to twitter in Cuba”, said Yoani. She is trying to get people across the world and mostly Cuba to be more creative in the world and to use technology to express their views. “Creativity opens windows when doors are locked, but we won’t settle for windows anymore”, said Yoani.

“Yoani Sanchez gave me a better outlook on the Cuban government and how she wants them to be creative and break the stereotype”, said Marchline Elie, a Valencia College student.

Sanchez ended with this quote “A Cuban government system is like an hour glass, the top is for the people who follow the system and the bottom is for the ones who are against the system.”

“It was an eye opening event for me because now I want to help her make a difference for the people in Cuba, it makes me want to follow her journey as a blogger”, said Aamira Browne, a Valencia College student.

Rwanda Genocide: Never Forgotten.. By: Alex Khatwani

East Campus – “40,000 people slaughtered within 6 hours by only using machetes and knives," said Michael Savage, a former British Army soldier.

             He had witnessed the entire genocide while he was there. Savage was sent with three other men to Rwanda in 1993 to assess the genocide events and he was sent again to answer final questions regarding the assessment in 1994.

             During the seminar that he had held on Sept.12 on East Campus, he revealed some of the most gruesome stories. The entire room was filled and each seat was taken by students, faculty, and families.

            With a firm voice he said “This is not Hollywood people, this is reality, Hollywood gives you sound effects, but it will not give you the sound of dogs eating corpses, Hollywood will not give you the smell of the corpses, it won’t even give you the feeling of actual fear” As soon as he said that, the entire room had a pin drop silence with some sighs and shocked faces. No one knew how to react at all to what he said.

            "It was remarkable how Michael used Hollywood to explain to the audience regarding the smell and sound effects," said Rachel Allen, a professor of Humanities.

            The Rwanda genocide consists of the Hutu tribe killing the Tutsis because as Savage said during the seminar, “The killing was to heal”. What caused the spark that lead to genocide was that the Tutsi were allowed to participate in the government which had weakened the Hutus. The change occurred for the Tutsis to participate on August 3^rd, 1993. Rosenberg, Jennifer.             As he continued with the seminar, he comes across a fact that made the audience gasp and that was “Roman Catholic priests were doing the killings too”. The Hutus used the church to eliminate its victims, the Tutsis. 

Savage came across the topic of the Holocaust and how it was “trivialized and distorted”. However he also mentioned that the Holocaust did not mention it being genocidal. “200 million people were killed because of Holocaust, famine, starvation, and bombing.”

             "The reason why Peace and Justice department decided to be in charge of this event is because we as the Peace and Justice department believed that not many people know about the genocide and it is our duty to reach out to them and let them know about what actually happened," said Linnette Bonilla, a student intern at the Peace and Justice office.

One of his student asked him the question that wasn't it 6 million Jews that were killed? He answered with a gasp with a five minute pause and responded “The death toll went up recently and it was miscounted.” Audiences started to mumble among st themselves because it was unbelievable.

 I had asked him in my interview with him that was is the message you’re trying to send to your audience and he responded with a firm and confident voice.

“We must not focus on the Holocaust anymore; we must change our direction and focus on the 200 million people who were killed. We must focus on preventing the same problem in the future and also think of stopping them because there are different ways to prevent them. You cannot prove genocide unless you prove the intent.”
